The Guide
How Many Nights, Where to Sleep, and Which Tour Covers Them
The aurora shows on clear nights, and the coast is often cloudy, so a northern lights holiday in Tromsø is a game of nights. Here is how long to stay, where, what it costs, and the evening tours whose terms work for a stay rather than a single night.
A northern lights holiday in Tromsø means three to five nights in the city between late August and early April, with evening tours that leave the centre around dark and drive to wherever the sky is clear. The aurora is often there; the clouds decide whether you see it, so the number of nights matters more than the month. Book the first evening early in the stay. The tour we would book first is Nordscape’s chase with the Unlimited Free Retries option, which takes you out again on later nights if the guide’s camera catches nothing: from $81 a person in current promotion (usually $108) for a coach seat, rated 4.8 from 459 reviews (checked October 2026).

How a northern lights holiday in Tromsø works
Tromsø sits under the auroral oval, the ring around the magnetic pole where the northern lights appear most often, and Visit Tromsø gives the season as late August to early April, with the lights most often active between about 20:00 and 02:00. What stops you seeing them is cloud. The city is on the coast, and on a cloudy evening the tours drive inland, towards the Lyngen Alps, the Skibotn valley or across the border into Finland, where the sky is often clearer. That is the whole logic of a holiday here: you base yourself in the city, keep the evenings free, and go out on the nights the forecast gives you a chance.
Visit Tromsø’s own advice is that the more nights you spend, the greater the chance that the aurora and the weather cooperate, and that northern lights tours are often fully booked, so book the first one before you arrive. How many nights in Tromsø sets out a three, four and five night plan.
The evening tours that suit a stay
Most chases are one-night products: you pay, you go out, and if the sky stays shut you have had a long drive. A few have terms that carry over to the rest of your holiday, and those are the ones to put on the first night.
| Tour | If you see nothing | Length | From, per person | Rating |

| Unlimited chase across borders | Full refund if the camera catches no aurora | 5 to 8 h | $162 | 4.5 (1,349) |
| Northern lights safari | Unlimited option: more tours during your stay | About 6 h | $99 in current promotion (usually $162) | 4.6 (8,876) |
| Fjord cruise with a second chance | A free second trip | 2 to 2.5 h | $127 | 4.3 (1,574) |
| Minibus chase with photos | Runs in any weather; no re-run | About 6 h | $139 in current promotion (usually $214) | 4.8 (7,015) |
| Glass-roofed lavvo overnight | You watch from camp all night | 1 night | $427 in current promotion (usually $474) | 4.8 (240) |

How long to stay
Three nights is a short holiday with one good chance and two spares; four or five nights is what we would plan for a first trip, because cloud on the coast can sit for two or three evenings at a time. Put the chase with the retry or refund terms on the first or second evening: if it fails, the guarantee has nights left to work with. Keep one evening for something with a chance of the lights built in, such as a husky or reindeer camp dinner. How many nights in Tromsø has the plans night by night.
When to go
From late August to early April the sky is dark enough. From about 27 November to 15 January the sun does not rise over Tromsø at all (Visit Tromsø), which gives the longest nights, the coldest weather and a few hours of blue twilight at midday. September, October and March bring milder evenings and daylight for fjord trips. The average temperature in Tromsø is about -2 °C in December and -3 °C in January and February (yr.no). The best time for a northern lights holiday goes month by month.
Where to stay
In the centre, for most people: almost every evening tour, the airport bus and the restaurants are there, and the airport is about 5 km away. Out of town, Sommarøy Arctic Hotel (about 50 minutes west), Malangen Resort (about an hour south) and Lyngen Lodge (about 2.5 hours from the airport) give you dark skies from the door, at the cost of fewer tours and longer transfers. For one night under the sky, the glass-roofed lavvo in the Lyngen Alps is the stay you can book here. Where to stay for the northern lights compares them.
What it costs
The tours are the part that changes the bill. A coach seat on Nordscape’s chase is $81 in current promotion (usually $108) a person, the small-group chase across borders $162, an evening at the husky camp with dinner $193, and the lavvo night $427 in current promotion (usually $474) with three meals (checked October 2026). At the usual prices, two chases and one camp dinner for two people come to roughly $800 to $1,100, before the hotel and flights. What a northern lights holiday in Tromsø costs adds it up for three, four and five nights.
Tromsø or Lapland?
Abisko in Sweden and Rovaniemi in Finland are the inland alternatives: colder, often clearer, and quieter at night, but with fewer flights and less to do between evenings. From Tromsø, the long chases cross into the same inland weather when the coast is cloudy, which is a large part of why we would base a first holiday here. Tromsø or Lapland puts them side by side on a map.
Between the evenings
The days are for the things you cannot do at night. Brim Explorer's hybrid-electric whale watching trip sails north past the Lyngen Alps to the fjords around Skjervøy, 7 to 9 hours out, at $184 in current promotion (usually $204) (checked October 2026). Husky sledding is a half-day trip once the snow comes, usually from November: Arctic Adventure Tours' self-drive tour on Kvaløya puts you on the runners for 70 to 80 minutes, at $362 (checked October 2026). For a single evening tour rather than a holiday, northernlightstromsotour.com reviews the Tromsø chases one by one. The northern lights holiday FAQ answers the rest, from the airport bus to the cold.

Tromsø Northern Lights Holiday FAQ
The questions people ask before booking a northern lights holiday in Tromsø, answered in the first sentence and explained in the ones after.
Plan on at least three or four nights, with an evening tour booked early in the stay so a cloudy night still leaves you more chances. Visit Tromsø gives no fixed number; its advice is that the more nights you spend, the better the chance that the aurora and the weather line up. How many nights in Tromsø sets out a three, four and five night plan.
From late August to early April, according to Visit Tromsø, and the aurora is most often active between about 20:00 and 02:00. From roughly 27 November to 15 January the sun stays below the horizon, so the nights are longest then. The best time for a northern lights holiday goes month by month.
There is no single best month: September, October and March bring milder weather with dark evenings, December and January bring the polar night and the most dark hours, and February adds daylight for activities. Clouds matter more than the month, which is why the number of nights you stay counts for more than the date you pick.
The evening tours are the big extra: at their usual prices on GetYourGuide in October 2026, an evening chase cost about $110 to $250 a person and a night in a glass-roofed lavvo about $470 with three meals. Several were on promotion below those prices when we checked. The airport bus is NOK 125 one way. What a northern lights holiday in Tromsø costs adds it up for three, four and five nights.
In the city centre for most holidays, because almost every evening tour starts there and drives to wherever the sky is clear. Staying out of town at Sommarøy, Malangen or in the Lyngen Alps gives darker skies from the door, but fewer tours, longer transfers and fewer places to eat. Where to stay for the northern lights compares the options on a map.
A few do, in different ways, and most do not. AGM Norway's unlimited chase refunds you in full if its camera catches no aurora; Nordscape's Unlimited Free Retries option lets you go out again on later nights, or gives 50% back if no seat is left; Rødne's fjord cruise gives a second trip. Most other chases run in any weather and refund only if the operator cancels.
Sometimes, on a strong night, but the street lights wash out a weak display, which is why the evening tours drive out of town. On a clear night, a walk to the shore or a ride up Fjellheisen, the cable car to Storsteinen above the city, gets you away from the brightest lights.
The Airport Express bus takes about 20 minutes and costs NOK 125 one way or NOK 200 return for an adult, paid by card. The airport is about 5 km from the centre, and a taxi takes around ten minutes. Best Arctic runs the bus; its winter timetable runs from 26 October 2026 to 31 March 2027.
Milder than most people expect for 69 degrees north: average temperatures in Tromsø are about -2 °C in December, -3 °C in January and February and -2 °C in March. Inland, where the tours drive on cloudy nights, it is colder, so most chases lend a thermal suit. Bring warm layers, a hat, gloves and boots with grip.
Both sit under the auroral oval; Tromsø has the city, the fjords and an airport 5 km away, while inland Lapland, such as Abisko or Rovaniemi, is colder and often clearer. The evening chases from Tromsø drive into Finland or Sweden when the coast is cloudy. Tromsø or Lapland compares them.
Tour operators sell flight and hotel packages, but you can build the same holiday yourself: a hotel in the centre for three to five nights, an evening chase on the first night, and a daytime activity or two. On GetYourGuide we found no multi-night Tromsø packages in October 2026; the nearest thing is a one-night stay in a glass-roofed lavvo in the Lyngen Alps. On the coastal ships, Hurtigruten and Havila each promise a free voyage on their long winter voyages if no aurora is seen.
Still a good one: NASA and NOAA said in October 2024 that the Sun had reached the maximum period of its 11-year cycle, and strong storms often come in the declining years after the peak. The Royal Observatory of Belgium's solar data centre expected further episodes of very enhanced activity over the following two years. Clear skies still decide whether you see it.
