Where to Stay in Tromsø for the Northern Lights
Where to stay for the northern lights in Tromsø: the city centre, Sommarøy, Malangen, the Lyngen Alps, the Tamok valley and a glass-roofed lavvo night, on a map (Oct 2026).
Stay in the centre of Tromsø for most northern lights holidays: almost every evening tour starts there and drives to wherever the sky is clear, and the airport bus, restaurants and daytime trips are all on hand. Stay out of town only for the dark sky from the door, and accept fewer tours and longer transfers for it. For one night out, the stay you can book with the transfer included is Aurora Wonderland’s glass-roofed lavvo in the Lyngen Alps, from $427 a person in current promotion (usually $474), rated 4.8 from 240 reviews (checked October 2026).

Town or out of town?
Light pollution is the case for staying out: a weak display that the street lights hide can be plain from a dark shore. Everything else argues for the centre. The evening chases start in town and drive for an hour or more, sometimes into Finland, to find a gap in the cloud; a hotel 90 minutes out cannot move when its own sky is cloudy, and most tours do not collect from there. Out of town also means fewer places to eat and, often, a car.
| Where | From Tromsø | What it is good for | The catch |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tromsø city centre | - | Every evening tour, the airport bus, restaurants | Street lights: you go out by tour |
| Sommarøy | About 50 min west | An island hotel on the open coast | Coastal cloud; few tours collect there |
| Malangen | About 1 hr south | A quiet fjord resort | You need its transfers or a car |
| Lyngen Alps | 110 min to 2.5 h | Mountains, dark skies, a lodge or a lavvo night | The longest transfers |
| Tamok valley | About 90 min | Inland, often clearer; Camp Tamok’s cabins | Very cold; far from town |
| Hatteng | 75 to 90 min | A glass-roofed aurora hut | A long drive back for the town’s tours |

Tromsø city centre

The default, and where we would stay on a first trip. The airport is about 5 km away, 20 minutes by the Airport Express bus. The chases leave from central meeting points in the evening, and a free evening lets you pick the night with the best forecast. On a clear night, the shore of the island or the top station of the Fjellheisen cable car is darker than the hotel window.
Sommarøy
Sommarøy Arctic Hotel is on an island on the outer coast, about 50 minutes west of Tromsø, and says its region is ideal for northern lights hunting from late September to late March. The dark comes to the door. It is also the coast, where cloud arrives first, so plan a night or two there inside a longer stay in town rather than the whole holiday.
Malangen
Malangen Resort sits on the Malangen fjord about an hour’s drive south of Tromsø, far from the city lights and suited to a few quiet nights; going out on the Tromsø chases from there means its transfers or your own car.
The Lyngen Alps
East of Tromsø, the Lyngen Alps are the darkest, most dramatic setting within reach. Lyngen Lodge, on the far side of the Lyngenfjord facing the peaks, is roughly 2.5 hours from Tromsø airport and runs northern lights trips from November to March. Aurora Wonderland’s basecamp, also in the Lyngen Alps, is the one-night version: a van and a short ferry ride from Prostneset in Tromsø harbour, about 110 minutes each way, a guided 2 km walk on foot or snowshoes, and a night in a private lavvo with a glass ceiling and a wood stove you keep going yourself. Bathrooms are shared, one indoor and one outhouse, and the night is spent at camp: this is not a chase.

The Tamok valley
Inland, about 90 minutes from Tromsø, the Tamok valley often has clearer skies than the coast; Lyngsfjord Adventure’s Camp Tamok has accommodation there and says the area has many cloud-free night skies in winter. It is much colder than the city. Tromsø Ice Domes, the ice hotel in the same valley, says it will not be open for booking in the 2026-27 winter.
Hatteng
North Experience’s Aurora Hut at Hatteng, in Storfjord, is a glass-roofed hut that Visit Tromsø lists as an overnight experience about 75 to 90 minutes from the city. Farther out, Lyngen North’s glass igloos at Rotsund are around three hours away, more a destination than a night out from Tromsø.
Our suggestion
Book the hotel in town for the whole holiday, put the first evening chase on the first or second night, and if you want one night under the sky, add the lavvo or a night at Sommarøy in the middle of the stay. That way a cloudy night out of town costs you one evening, not the trip. For the length of stay, see how many nights in Tromsø; for the cost of the extras, what a northern lights holiday costs.
